OCT31 HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Happy Halloween, everyone!
I don't usually celebrate Halloween in Germany, but apparently the children here in Cambodia like that spooky day. When I was sick this week (and I couldn't come to class) my older class (I will post more about my school life very soon) wrote some Halloween stories. We read them in class today while enjoying a homemade Halloween cocktail made of blood (grape juice), eyeballs (litchis), bone pieces (banana) and crocodile ears (lime)! Mhh, that sure was a tasty (trick or) treat! I had come up with this recipe in the morning while eating my breakfast -although, to be honest, there wasn't much to come up with because those were the only ingredients left in my section of the fridge. Everyone liked that mixture though!
If you feel like reading one of our scary stories and you're not a scaredy-cat scroll down to the bottom of the post!

Frohes Halloween?

We didn't finish all of the bloody potion so my lucky 5th Graders sipped up the rest of it while listening to a Halloween song (and filling in the blanks on the lyrics sheet).

THE BEST HALLOWEEN EVER by Srey Pich

Nadi and her brother Tom learned at Seametrey School. Nadi was 14 and Tom was 15 years old. One day, their teacher, Cosima, asked the class to create something about Halloween because it was nearly the 31st of October.
When school was over, Nadi and Tom walked home. They were worried about the assignment that their teacher had given them. On the way home, Nadi said: “I don’t know anything about Halloween. How can I create something about Halloween?” Tom said: “I can write scary story.” Tom also gave his sister an idea. He said: “You can create a scary movie right? You’re good at making movies.” Nadi was very happy and ran all of the rest of the way home. After Nadi and Tom had eaten their dinner, they ran to their own room. Nadi created her scary movie and Tom wrote his scary story. Both of them worked until midnight.
On Saturday, Nadi and Tom woke up late because they didn’t have school. They had breakfast together and continued their work until it was finished. Finally, on Monday, they took their work to school. Nadi left her bag on her table and went to go play. In their class there was a girl who did not like Nadi and Tom. Her name was Travit. She hadn’t done her work yet so she decided to steal Nadi’s video. The school bell rang and class started. Teacher Cosima asked for the students’ work. Everybody took out their work and put it on the table. But Nadi couldn’t find her work. The teacher said: “It’s ok. You can do it tomorrow.” Teacher Cosima looked at all of the projects.
Nadi knew that Travit had stolen her work and she was very angry. She walked out of the class and into the forest. Usually, she would be very scared but she was so angry that she wasn’t afraid any more. Suddenly, she fell into a hole. She was very scared. She screamed and closed her eyes. When she opened her eyes again, she saw zombies and ghosts. She was very scared so she screamed again, but then a handsome ghost came and covered her mouth with his cold hand. The ghost said: “Don’t scream! If you scream the zombies will eat your brain.” Nadi asked the handsome ghost: “What kind of ghost are you? And what’s your name?” The ghost said: “My name is Alexen and I am a Halloween ghost.” Then Alexen took Nadi to his home. They talked with each other. Nadi asked: “The zombies eat your brains but why don’t all of you go to live somewhere else?” Alexen replied: “We can’t because we have a leader who is very evil. He sent those zombies to guard us.” Nadi told Alexen how she had come there and about her teacher. After he had listened to her the ghost said that he would go with Nadi.
Together, they went to Seametrey School and Nadi walked into her classroom. Her teacher asked: “Nadi, where have you been?” Nadi told everyone about the zombies and the ghosts but nobody believed her, instead, they all laughed. When Alexen appeared everone was very surprised. Travit said: “Nadi, what are you doing? The teacher asked us to create something about Halloween but you just took a boy dressed in a ghost costume to show us?” Nadi replied: “He’s not a boy, he’s a ghost!” The whole class laughed. Suddenly, it became dark and some strange sound could be heard. A cold wind blew behind them and the tables and chairs started to shake. The windows and even the door closed. Alexen said: “Oh no, the zombies are coming. They know that I came here. They will eat our brains!” Then he screamed: “Everyone, do not breath! When the zombies come they will eat your brain!” First, nobody believed him but then they saw some zombies so they stopped breathing. The ghosts and zombies came and their evil Leader was behind them. His face looked very scary. One of his eyes was popped out with blood. The back of his head had been cut by a saw and a knife stuck in his neck. His hands –one big, one small- and his mouth were bloody and his body was full of worms and some pieces of brain. But then teacher Cosima was very brave: She stood up and said something to the evil leader that made him scared of humans so he flew away with his zombies to somewhere nobody knows.
Everything became normal again and it was time for Halloween. Everybody dressed up in scary costumes. All of the ghosts joined the children and knocked on every classroom door. Travit came and apologized to Nadi: “Sorry, Nadi, that I stole your work. Can I still be friends with you like before?” Nadi said “Sure, you’re always going to be my friend!” Both hugged each other and smiled. Everyone shared food and candy and ate together. They played, danced and sang together. When it was time for the ghosts to go they were a bit sad but then Alexen said: “See you next Halloween! I’m happy to know all of you and I’m sad to say goodbye, too.” The ghosts disappeared. Nadi said: “This was the best Halloween ever!”
